Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart.

On his return to America in 1952, he worked as a graphic designer in The New York Times and later as the art director of an advertising agency for many years.

His career as an author/illustrator did not start until one day, he was invited by respected educator and author, Bill Martin Jr, to illustrate a story Bill had written. The result of their collaboration was the much loved Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

This marked the beginning of Eric Carle’s true career. His first wholly original book was 1,2,3 to the Zoo, followed soon afterward by the celebrated classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, published in 1969.

Eric Carle has illustrated more than seventy books, many bestsellers, most of which he also wrote; more than 110 million copies of his books have sold around the world.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar celebrates its 45th anniversary this year! Every adult, teenager, “tween” and younger child who has read this classic will have fond memories of the enchantment they experienced when they first had it read to them. The die-cut holes, the vibrant colours of the collages, the different sizes of pages makes this book so visually appealing.

From the tranquil setting under the moon where a little egg is laid, one can’t help wondering what’s going to happen next. Turn the page and here in great contrast is the brilliant sun smiling at you! Then out comes the Very Hungry Caterpillar who’s looking for some food! As he eats his way from one food source to another, young readers munch with him, poke their fingers in the hole of every food and chant the days of the week, the numbers and the names of the food; it takes one week, just enough time for the Very Hungry Caterpillar to turn into a beautiful butterfly! What a fun and effortless way Eric Carle has created to help young children learn with the very hungry caterpillar! This classic book offers a wonderful sharing and bonding time for parents and children!

A little spider is busily weaving her web regardless of other animals’ attempts to tempt her to join in their activities. Her hard work pays off in the end when she can easily catch a fly and fall asleep at the end of a very busy day. While young readers learn the sound of every animal, enjoy the pictures and the repetitions, they can actually feel the spider’s web through the innovative use of raised printing on the page. A great lesson on hard work is effectively conveyed in this adorable story.

Another perfect book for Spring for the young to learn about nature through the story of a little cricket.  In this story, a young cricket attempts to answer every greeting from different insects by rubbing his wings together, but to no avail. His final success comes as a surprise to all young readers as he chirps beautifully. He is no longer quiet! Every child will love it!

This is a heartwarming tale of a new-born, lonely firefly in search of others of his kind in the dark. He mistakes a number of things for other fireflies along the way, including a candle and a car’s headlight. The light-up surprise at the end when he finds his companions is a tremendous delight and relief for a young child who can’t help sympathizing the lonely firefly’s plight.

Eric Carle has published about 70 books and they continue to captivate young children throughout the world. All of them show great understanding and respect for children as well as his knowledge and love of nature.  With his masterful artwork and fantastic imagination, the results are many perennial favourites that are not only fun to read but lay the foundation for learning for the early years.

Apart from the above four titles which are perfect for Spring; scroll down for more titles in the fascinating world of books by Eric Carle.
