Review
Bestselling children's author, Sarah Brennan's latest creation, the dark horse, galloped into Kiddyland on a chilly Saturday morning, bringing great excitement to our members as we celebrated The Year of the Horse.
Amazed by the legend of the Stallion from the West brought home by travelers, Emperor Han Wudi tried every means to have this handsome creature captured. Yet the wild and free dark horse remained dignified in captivity. A relationship of mutual respect was formed between them as the Emperor treated him with kindness. When he returned to the roving life he loved the most in the end, he left the Emperor with the prosperity that he foretold and loving memories of him.
Our audience listened in amazement this imaginative tale so rich in language and rhymes. As always, Sarah engaged our crowd, both parents and children, with not just an original and touching story but an interesting lesson on history of the fabulous silk road, Emperor Han Wudi and the Ferghana horses on which the story was based.
Sarah ended the session wishing everyone one's dreams come true in 2014, just like the Emperor Han Wudi and the wild and wonderful Dark Horse.
In The Tale of the Dark Horse is the eighth in Chinese Calendar Tales, the author and Harry Harrison, the illustrator, have produced yet another winner in this entertaining series for readers to discover more about Chinese cultures through funny and fabulous stories.
