On 21 May 2011 Blooming Club's members gathered at TST Exhibition Hall to hear Hong Kong's bestselling English children's writer Sarah Brennan's reading of The Tale of Rhonda Rabbit from her funny and fabulous Chinese Calendar Tales series.

The author's love of Chinese culture is once again shown in her choice of Emperor Qin Shi Huang in her storyline. Who would have guessed that the mighty Emperor was much troubled by Rhonda, a bad bunny who nibbled all the vegetables in his garden because he loved all sorts of vegetables! In spite of the big reward offered to the one who captured Rhonda, she remained at large and continued to help herself to the Emperor's vegetables until she was caught by the cunning royal cat Alice.

Just when all the children present were worried that Rhonda would be turned into lunch, the Emperor's little grandson, who was fond of furry and creatures, especially those with floppy ears and cuddly features released Rhonda from the cage. After having tasted a wonderful meal believed to be of the finest rabbit ever, the Emperor was so happy that he hardly remembered that his royal cat Alice was never seen again in his court……. So what was in the delicious meal the Emperor had? Needless to say, our clever members all knew the answer. The hilarious story brought lots of laughter to our crowd of both children and parents.

True to Sarah's unique style, the inspiring story does not just entertain but also educate young readers on some interesting aspects of Chinese culture. Children learn something about the peace loving character of those born under the Chinese Zodiac sign of rabbit, the reign of Emperor Qin, the history of the Great Wall, not to mention the names of Chinese vegetables! As with the previous titles in the series, Harry Harrison's wild and wacky illustrations have brought the story to live. The bestselling author / illustrator duo has certainly made it again judging by the queue of fans at the signing afterwards.
