Review
Fairy tales that have been passed down generation after generation continue to appeal to readers today. The enthusiastic audience’s response at Mrs. Lindy Fok’s lively delivery of Jack and the Beanstalk from Macmillan’s Lift-the-Flap Fairy Tale series certainly proved their popularity.
First printed over two hundred years ago, the story of Jack’s magic beans turning into a gigantic stalk that goes high up to the sky where a giant lives has delighted children all over the world. And the giant’s roaring of “Fee, fi, fo, fum,”, and his claim that he smells the blood of a human has equally scared many young readers, yet at the same time engrossed them to find out what will happen in the end.
Retold for younger children, this edition of the classic tale is beautifully illustrated by Nick Sharratt. It is filled with surprises on every page, as there are flaps for youngsters to lift and find the attraction inside. Coupled with Stephen Tucker’s engaging text, this is a great read for children to enjoy and learn new word usage at the same time. Lindy took the time to explain words such as “swap, snap, massive, scramble, nimble, tiptoe, bellow and scurry” and show how they have livened up the story.
When the story was over, Lindy and Christa Tam, project manager of Blooming Club, showed everyone how to make a paper beanstalk from newspaper. In no time, thanks to the children and parents’ participation, the corner was turned into a small forest of beanstalks!
It really made our day to see how exuberant our members are. We will be bringing more interactive events to help make your reading experience more memorable. Stay tuned!
Until then, happy reading.
