Review
Most of us grew up listening to Grimm's Fairy Tales and everyone has one which is more fondly remembered than the others because it reminds us of a particular stage in our childhood. But the Brothers Grimm collected over 200 tales for people all over the world to enjoy and there are still many that you may not have heard. On 27 November, five storytellers from The Talespinners brought five stories to life - The Three Feathers, Death's Messengers, The Queen Bee, Little Red Riding Hood and The Lost Happy Endings – at Tsimshatsui Book Centre. Though for most of the Talespinners, it was their first public performance, each one of them had her own unique style of lively delivery with warmth and humour which delighted the audience, both parents and children.
The Three Feathers told by Lynne Kirk is about three brothers' contest to inherit the kingdom after their father's death. Death Messengers told by Kitty But, is about how death seems to come unannounced but in fact its messengers come in the form of ailments. The Queen Bee retold by Blooming Club's Christa Tam is about three brothers' attempts to free an enchanted castle. The ever- popular Little Red Riding Hood told by Janet Chan is, needless to say, about a little girl's encounter with a big bad wolf on her visit to her grandmother. Last but not least, The Lost Happy Ending told by Jenn Horgos is a magical a fairy tale written by Carol Ann Duffy in Brothers Grimm style about what happened when the wicked witch stole all the happy endings.
In two years' time, it will be the bicentennial anniversary of Grimm's Fairy Tales. These stories are still alive today thanks to Jacob and Wilhelm who collected and wrote down the wonderful stories passed down over generations for hundreds of years by ordinary folk. Jan Mann, a Blooming Club honorary advisor and a member of The Talespinners closed the session by encouraging Blooming Club's members to keeping stories alive by telling the stories heard to others.
