Julia Donaldson's bestselling The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo Child's once again drew dozens of enthusiastic children and parents to our first storytelling session in 2011 on 7 Jan. It was the second time Blooming Club featured the two popular titles at our events since October 2009.

Some in the audience already knew the clever little mouse's adventure in the deep dark wood where he outwits the hungry fox, the owl and the snakes preying on him with the imaginary Gruffalo he has invented. They recited Julia Donaldson's easy rhyming text along with Mrs. Lindy Fok our reader for the day. Everyone was very amused to find the Gruffalo did exist and was tricked by the mouse to scare off the snake, the owl and the fox; eventually even the Gruffalo was scared off by the cunning, little mouse.

In the Gruffalo's Child, the curious Gruffalo's Child ignores his father's warning about the Big Bad Mouse and ventures to the deep dark wood to see if it does exist. He boldly faces each of his encounters with the snake, the owl and the fox and eventually the little mouse and only when he is tricked to believe that it's the Big Bad Mouse does he run back to the security of his own home. Julia Donaldson's story and Axel Scheffler's illustration perfectly capture a child's yearning for adventure.

The children enjoyed Lindy's lively delivery of these two funny stories with flowing and witty rhymes. Her occasional use of some Cantonese words in explanation really helped them along. They were pleasantly surprised also by the Gruffalo's masks and puppets so thoughtfully prepared by Lindy.

It was a very happy day for our lucky members as they received three sets of complimentary tickets to The Gruffalo's musical currently showing in Hong Kong and three books kindly donated/presented by Miss Janet Chan, Sales & Marketing Manger of Macmillan Asia.

We thank all our members for joining us and thank Lindy for sharing with us her love of reading to children, ABA Productions, Tall Stories and Macmillan for the prizes as well as Janet for the presentation."
