On 29 Jan 2011, our Blooming Club Children's books corner was completely packed as parents and children waited keenly for Mrs. Sue Ribeiro's Moomin storytelling. Much to their disappointment, Auntie Sue was not able to come because her dog, Jezebel, was seriously ill. Christa Tam, project manager of Blooming Club, stood in to tell the story.

In spite of Moomins' popularity, the audience admitted that they knew very little about them except that they are a family of hippo look-alike creatures who are white and round, with large snouts that come down to their chests, long tails and short stumpy legs.

The Moomins are a carefree and adventurous family who live in their house in Moominvalley, in a forest in the north, near Lappland where the reindeer roam. It gets very cold in the winter, so Moomins hibernate from autumn to early spring.

The Moomin family is headed by Moominpapa, who loves to make things, and Moominmama, who loves to snooze in the afternoons. She has a big black handbag where she keeps all the family valuables and guards it with her life, often sleeping with it under her pillow. They have a son called Moomintroll, who loves adventures and coffee and says "Well strike me pink!" when he is surprised.

In Moomin and the Birthday Button, Moomintroll was very upset when his friends Sniff, Snufkin, Snorkmaiden and Little My didn't seem to remember his birthday. But he found out later that the reason was that they were very busy preparing a birthday present to surprise him. This picture book is the first in a series in this format to introduce the Moomins to younger readers.

Sue Ribeiro especially likes the Moomin family because they love and respect nature, whether it be the sea or the forest, the birds and bats and bees. At night they like to sit outside, if it's not too cold, and watch the moon and stars. There are many lessons for the children to learn from the Moomins while enjoying their magical adventures.

The session closed with everyone enjoying the delicious Moomin cookies prepared by Auntie Sue.
