On 12 November we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine with a reading by Mrs. Sue Ribeiro at our new home base in Olympian City.

All the children in the audience had wonderful grandmothers who are loving and caring and so it wasn't surprising that some of them who were unfamiliar with the story, looked rather worried to hear that George's Grandma was a selfish, grumpy old woman who treated him rather badly.

When the medicine Grandma was taking never seemed to do her any good George decided to take matters into his own hands by creating a magic medicine – one that might just cure her completely (or blow off the top of her head)!

The children were hooked right from the beginning when Mrs. Ribeiro presented the story using a PowerPoint of the illustrations by Quentin Blake from the newly published 30th Anniversary colour edition.

Surprise, surprise! The magic medicine George had created not only blew Grandma up to a giant size but also the farm animals into enormous animals. His Dad wanted him to duplicate the formula to make money but George simply couldn't remake the same one, and so after three attempts, his Medicine No. 4 conversely shrank his Grandma into nothing!

The children adored the story; it's funny and it's a bit crazy and they couldn't stop giggling at Dahl's legendary twisted humour.. What's more, they seemed relieved to know that the lovable George would not be bossed around anymore by grumpy old Grandma.

At the end of the session, we posed for a group picture as usual but it was particularly difficult to get everyone in because some children couldn't wait to try "Grandma" Sue's home made cookies!

Our special thanks to Mrs. Sue Ribeiro for reading this much-loved story and her yummy cookies.
