An event featuring a Julia Donaldson title is always a big draw at Blooming Club. More so when the author’s What the Ladybird Heard was told by Elizabeth Beer,  an experienced teacher from the British Council.

Our members loved singing along with Elizabeth when she introduced the animals in the Old MacDonald Had a Farm song with her portable farm filled with plush toys from the story – the cow, the hen, the goose, the duck, the horse, the hog, the sheep….  but not the ladybird. The ladybird never said a word.

Yet it was the ladybird who overheard the two robbers’ plan to steal the fine prize cow and who saved the day by having each animal sound like another to trick the robbers into going in the wrong direction, leading them right into the duck  pond rather than the cow shed!  Children who participated in relaying the ladybird’s “Save the cow!” message enjoyed dressing up in  the animal masks as they passed the message on.  By the time the robbers  stepped into the duck pond, the children were cheering!  This brilliantly entertaining story told in rhyming text was a great way to celebrate the joy of reading just one day before World Book Day .

We thank Elizabeth and her team from the British Council for all their support in making this event a great success and all the parents and children for participating with such enthusiasm.
