Story Time: The Night Before Christmas (15/12/2012)

'Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the house
not a creature was stirring,
not even a mouse ......'

On a Christmas Eve, while everyone was soundly asleep, a man awoke to a clatter to find out what the matter was.

What did he see?

It was something most magical that will capture every child's imagination.

Let's find out together on 15 December from one of the most famous stories for Christmas - Clement C. Moore's The Night Before Christmas.

About the author:

Clement C. Moore (1779 – 1863) was a well known scholar born in New York. His publications included a wide range of topics on religion, languages, politics and poetry. The Night Before Christmas was published in 1823 at the request of his children, but it wasn't until 1844 that he first acknowledged that he was the author. Legend has it that he composed the story on a snowy winter's day on a shopping trip in a sleigh, and his inspiration for St. Nicholas was from a Dutch handyman. He is forever remembered as the man who truly gave St. Nicholas to the world.

About the performers:

Peter, Paul and Mary was the Grammy Award winning folk-singing trio from the US whose career spanned about 50 years. Peter and Paul composed a melody for The Night Before Christmas in 1983 in time for the first annual Holiday Concert at Carnegie Hall. Years later, Mary recorded a spoken version of the original poem while she was in ill health, and Peter and Paul promised to create a very special musical background track for it. It is included in the CD in this Macmillan picture edition.

About the storyteller:

Mrs. Judy Luk is originally from the US. She has lived in Hong Kong for more than 18 years, and is the former headmistress of the Chung Chi Nursery School at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is passionate about reading because it presents a child with a storehouse of creative thinking, expression, language usage and inspiration, in addition to knowledge and information.
