Winnie-the-Witch Halloween Party on 30 Oct 2010.

We had a lovely time at our Winnie-the-Witch Halloween Party on 30 Oct 2010 with about 20 young members from toddlers to pre-teens in attendance. Mrs. Judy Luk, former head mistress of Chung Chi Nursery School, Hong Kong Chinese University, was there to tell the story of Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin and share the origin of Halloween and the American customary manner of celebrating this pagan festival.

To bring some spooky elements to the event, Mrs. Luk started off by reading In the Dark Dark Wood, which retells traditional rhymes with surprise twists. The children took delight in anticipating what scary creatures would be coming out each time the flaps were lifted. The children loved it when the white ghost was revealed on final page. Mrs. Luk also recommended a number of series about witches including Meg and Mog, Worst Witch and other books suitable for this time of year.

For readers who love Winnie-the-Witch series, Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin, is yet another gem from Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul. The story of Winnie's love of vegetables that prompts her to grow some of her own is a great example to teach children that greens are good for them. Winnie, with the help of her magic wand and her "Abracadabra" spell, easily grows her vegetable garden into a stupendous size with enough food for all the villagers. But the remaining empty shell is a problem she needs to solve and her fantastic idea to turn it into a pumpkin helicopter amused all, especially the boys in the audience.

More fun with Winnie-the-Witch will no doubt continue at home because every child there received a Winnie-the-Witch activity pack from the publisher, Oxford University Press, in addition to lots of candies. There is even a Winnie’s Pumpkin Soup recipe for moms and dads to cook with the children. Visit www.winnie-the-witch.com for more of Winnie’s wonderful world.
