Teacher & Parent Workshop: The Power of Reading (03/05/2011)

Free voluntary reading, or reading because you want to, is the powerful tool we have in language education. Studies show that those who read more read better, write better, have larger vocabularies, and better control of grammar, and evidence for the "power of reading" exists for first and second languages and children and adults.
If reading is so important, how can we make sure it happens? Studies show that read-alouds and discussion of good books help a great deal, but by far the most important way is to make sure readers have access to lots of interesting, comprehensible reading material. For children living in poverty, libraries are generally the only source of books, and studies confirm that those with access to higher quality school libraries read better.
Another positive result pleasure reading is that those who read more show less mental decline as they get older. Reading for pleasure can be combined with two other ways of preventing or delaying dementia: bilingualism and coffee!
Come and meet Dr. Stephen Krashen on Tuesday, 3rd May at our Tsimshatsui Book Centre, he will share his experiences of how to make English reading fun and enjoyable for children.
*Teachers and Parents are welcome to join us!
