Bhakti Mathur, author of "Amma, Tell Me About Diwali", came to our Story Time on 24 Nov 2012 in her country's costume, the 'churidar-kurta'. It's so beautiful!

There are many Indians living in Hong Kong but we really do not know much about their culture. Thanks to Bhakti, we heard the story of Diwali, the festival of lights which starts off the New Year in November in India. Diwali celebrates the homecoming of Prince Rama and his victory over Ravana, the devil demon King. The story is magical!

Next, Bhakti told a story of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth who rewards her true devotees with fortune and good health. The message of the story was to do your best at whatever you do. Honesty and dedication are the only diyas (oil lamps) that will guide Lakshmi to you.

At the end of the session, much to our members' surprise, each person received a small gift of sweets called "ladoos" from Bhakti. Everyone could then have another taste of Indian culture at home.

Thank you so much for sharing the stories and the gifts, Bhakti!

Thank you, children and parents, for coming.

Happy Diwali!
