The chilly weather was just right for our Christmas Storytime on 21 Dec 2013 as children cozied up at our corner in Kiddyland as storyteller Lynne Kirk transported us to winter wonderland with the much loved The Elves and the Shoemaker from the Brothers Grimm, and The Tomten by Astrid Lindgren.

Lynne told, with great charm, this two-century old story about how the elves helped a poor shoemaker by creating the most beautiful shoes for him to help his business and how the shoemaker's wife then returned the favour by making lovely clothes for the elves. It delighted our young members that kindness was rewarded.

Though it is a well-known story the children were mesmerized by Lynne's gentle and expressive rendition as well as the attractive illustrations in the newly issued version in the Read It Yourself with Ladybird series.

We were then transported to a cold snowy night on a farm where the Tomten, a Swedish gnome who is the traditional guardian of farms, keeps watch on the animals and the humans in the middle of the night. This classic story has delighted children for decades but is not well known here. Our thanks to Lynne for bringing this soothing story to us.

Both adults and children had great fun trying to solve the Christmas and winter related riddles Lynne had prepared for them - though some proved to be a little hard for the audience.

Our story time ended with everyone in a festive mood singing the simple interactive song Lynne taught in the beginning followed by 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas', as Lynne had promised, bringing us back from a winter wonderland in time for lunch.
