Knowing that Peter Brown wouldn’t be able to come to Blooming Club for an event during the Young Readers Festival due to time restrictions, we had to have our event before the Festival to introduce these must-read titles to our members.

On 25 February 2012, Mrs. Judy Luk began the session sharing her love of pets, showing the children pictures of her cats, followed by reading Children Made Terrible Pets. This charming story of Lucy Bear who had found a human boy and brought him home to be her pet delighted the children. Despite her mother’s warning that children made terrible pets, Lucy was determined to keep the boy; they had fun together in the beginning but difficulties soon began to emerge. Lucy found out ultimately that her Mum was right; the boy belonged to his family. When asked, our members promised not to bring any animals they found outside home to be their pets.

Following a funny story, the audience was enchanted by another brilliantly illustrated story, The Curious Garden. Everyone enjoyed this uplifting story of Liam who found some plants amid an old abandoned railway track in a dreary city; he cared for them, inspired others to do the same and eventually turned the lifeless city into a beautiful place. As the pages were turned (on screen), the children were amazed by the miraculously changes brought to the city by all the gardeners who followed in Liam’s footsteps. How wonderful it was to see one person’s effort make such a big difference in the lives of many! We hope that all children take this story to heart and start caring about their environment too and think about the differences they can make too individually and collectively in their schools.

We thank Peter Brown for his beautiful books and the important messages found in them. We thank Mrs. Judy Luk for telling the stories.
